Did you know you have the right to be safe at work?

On Behalf of | May 17, 2019 | Workplace Injuries

When you clock in at work, you are probably not thinking about the many ways that you could experience an injury in the workplace. Whether you work behind a desk or on a construction site, there are certain things that could cause you harm. No matter your job description, you have the right to expect safety in your place of work.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, workers are entitled to a reasonable expectation of safety when they are on the job. It is the responsibility of each employer to provide whatever employees need to be safe, whether that is specific types of training or equipment. In the event of a workplace accident, you also have the right to seek benefits through a workers’ compensation claim.

What are your rights?

It can be helpful to note that one of the most important steps to protecting your rights is to be aware of them. When it comes to your safety, it is prudent to know what to expect from your Ohio employer and your company. Some of your rights include the following:

  • Whatever training you need to do your job safely and effectively
  • Work with equipment that is safe and properly maintained
  • Have protection from toxic substances and chemicals that can cause harm
  • Ask for appropriate safety equipment for your job
  • Request an OSHA inspection if you feel it is necessary

You also have the right to report an injury in the event you get hurt at work. You should not experience retaliation or any form of discipline for seeking workers’ compensation benefits, asking for a safety inspection or reporting dangerous working conditions. It is actually illegal for an employer to retaliate against you for doing any of these things.

Protecting these rights

Working in dangerous or potentially hazardous conditions is not acceptable, nor is retaliation for reporting these things. If you have concerns about your rights, you may want to speak with an attorney about what you can do and how you can seek a beneficial resolution to your concerns.

If you do experience an injury due to a workplace accident, you have the right to file a workers’ compensation claim without fear of retaliation from your employer. It is beneficial to act quickly to file this claim and follow the proper procedures as outlined by your employer. No matter what caused your workplace injuries, you have the right to seek support.
