Can self-operating construction equipment improve site safety?

On Behalf of | Apr 19, 2019 | Construction Accidents

If you are an Ohio construction worker, you know that one of the biggest risks you face at work involves the use of heavy machinery and equipment. A combination of human error and improper maintenance can lead to devastating accidents on construction sites, but technological advances may be able to change that. At some point in the future, self-operating construction equipment may make your job safer.

Construction is an inherently risky occupation. It involves physical labor using potentially dangerous equipment in a variety of environments. Every day, workers suffer life-altering or fatal injuries due to issues that are preventable. Safety must be a priority on every jobsite, and certain types of equipment may be able to help employers accomplish this and reduce the overall number of construction accidents.

Technology and safety

You know that self-driving vehicles are already a reality, and you will likely be sharing the road with these vehicles soon. This type of technology could also apply to the development of automated equipment and self-driving vehicles on construction sites. One issue in appropriately applying self-driving technology on a construction site is the use of sensors — construction sites are challenging, dirty and constantly changing.

The development of two different types of technology is a big step forward in the effort to effectively implement automated technology in the construction industry. LiDAR technology allows a sensor to see things in 3-D, much like the human eye. High-resolution imaging radar may also be a way to make sensors better and more effective. Dust, debris and other things can affect the accuracy of both of these technologies.

The right way to implement technology

Sensor-controlled vehicles and equipment may be a big step forward in making construction easier and safer for the men and women who work in this field. However, the implementation of any type of new technology should happen after careful testing and clear communication. Safety should be the priority, and employees should have whatever training is necessary to work safely with any new equipment or technology.

You may work in a risky job, but you are entitled to reasonable expectation of safety when you clock in. If you suffered injuries in a jobsite accident or you have concerns about your rights as an employee, it can be helpful to discuss your concerns with an experienced workers’ compensation attorney.
