On Behalf of | Apr 6, 2018 | Qualifying For SSD/SSI Benefits

Social Security disability benefits are important benefits for many disabled individuals. Because of their importance, disabled individuals may wonder how to qualify for Social Security disability (SSD) benefits. There are both work history and medical requirements that must be met to qualify for SSD benefits. Qualifying for SSD benefits is important for disabled individuals and their families which is why they should understand the process of applying for benefits.

To qualify for SSD benefits the disabled individual must have worked jobs that paid into Social Security and must meet the requirements to be considered disabled according to the Social Security Administration’s definition of disability. Generally, disabled individuals who are unable to work for a year or longer because of their disability may be eligible to receive SSD benefits.

Disabled individuals must have earned the necessary work credits to qualify for disability benefits and there are also requirements as to when those credits can be earned to be eligible for benefits. The age of the disabled individual is also another factor that is considered. The requirements to qualify for disability include that the disabled individual cannot perform the types of work they performed previously; they cannot adjust to another type of work because of their medical condition; and their disability is expected to last a year or longer or result in death.

The medical condition the disabled individual suffers from must be severe and there are several considerations the Social Security Administration uses when evaluating a claim for SSD benefits. Qualifying for social Security disability benefits can be complex which is why is it helpful for disabled individuals to understand the extensive process and how to apply for benefits when needed.
