Dump truck reportedly caused man’s death in construction accident

On Behalf of | Jul 26, 2013 | Construction Accidents

As highway drivers pass by a construction zone, few think about the dangers that site workers face every day. There are the vehicles zooming past, of course, but not all of the hazards are off-site — in reality, many of them are part of the construction itself. This is highlighted by the recent death of a worker who spent three decades working for the Ohio Department of Transportation. His life ended while working on a stretch of I-270 on the southwest side of Columbus. According to reports, the incident occurred at the Georgesville Road exit around 9 a.m.

The 57-year-old man was killed when a dump truck filled with concrete was backing up. Officials said that it was heading east when it struck the man and caused his death. Reports indicate that he was behind a concrete barrier belonging to the ODOT when the incident happened. Many people are upset by his loss, including officials from the ODOT, which he retired from in 2005. At the time of the accident, the 57-year-old was working for Shelly and Sands Co., a construction crew that is often contracted by the ODOT for transportation solutions. News outlets indicate that the accident is still being investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Unit. This may mean that more details will be clear in the near future. The man left a wife and family behind, as well as a number of co-workers.

Construction accidents can alter the lives of many people around an injured worker. They can even kill someone, as evidenced by this recent event. If you or someone you know have been injured by an on-the-job accident, please speak with a lawyer about your circumstances. By doing so, you may be able to get a better sense of what you can or cannot do to seek compensation for the damage that has been done.
