West Virginia has the most disabled workers

On Behalf of | May 21, 2013 | Qualifying For SSD/SSI Benefits

Social Security Disability insurance (SSDI) provides help for those who cannot work in jobs with their existing skills and education. A news report lists the states with the most residents on disability. The report notes that there is a correlation with the increase in the number of applications for SSDI and the unemployment rates.

The suppressed premise behind many of these statements is that these workers could work if they really wanted to, but are feel they are better off by going on government assistance. In reality, we think many of the states that appear on the list are unsurprising, given the job climate, the aging of the workforce, and the types of jobs where one is likely to develop disabilities.

First on the list was West Virginia. Given the fact that the primary source of jobs in West Virginia for decades has been mining, and it is not very shocking that West Virginia was number one. Mining is a very dangerous profession, as the recent Upper Big Branch mining disaster that killed 29 miners in 2010 demonstrated. While mine disasters receive a great deal of new coverage, workers are injured every day in and around mines.

Coal dust has long been known to cause black lung disease, and a coal miner, once afflicted will grow progressively worse, and become unable to work. Even if they avoid black lung, the work is hard labor that wears on bodies and leaves many with various physical disabilities.

West Virginia also has the lowest number of college graduates, meaning most of the workforce is employed in manual labor jobs, making unsuited for desk job and vulnerable to physical injuries.
